Nyssa didn’t say anything, but she didn't have to. Her tears said enough. The Doctor knew she understood, but that didn't mean she was happy about it.
Tegan begged him to do something. He heard his own voice--"I can't, there's nothing I can do"--but he wasn't aware of the words. His eyes were fixed straight ahead on the TARDIS view screen. One thought burned through his mind: "Adric, I'm sorry."
The fireball blossomed and extinguished quickly in the vacuum of space. But the Doctor continued to stare at the afterimage, into the heart of the light. Into the silence.
