"I was a dad once."
He'd said it so casually. The stricken look on Rose's face had only registered at the edge of his conscience. But now that the crisis had been averted, now that he had the time to dwell, it came back to him—along with that vague uneasy feeling he got whenever he mentioned his family.
He was only assuming he'd been a father. He had a granddaughter, so he knew logically, he had a daughter. Or a son. Or a daughter and a son. Maybe two daughters and two sons. If he were a father, who was the mother? He could remember everything else. He remembered his granddaughter, every single Cousin, the Kithriarch, even the Master in the days before his hearts had turned to darkness. Why couldn't he remember his own children?
There were two possibilities. One was that someone had erased that part of his memories. But he'd double and triple checked, and there had been no tampering. The other possibility was that he was doing it himself. That something had happened to cause his conscious mind to suppress it. He done everything he could to float that memory to the surface, but nothing had worked.
What had been so horrible he had forced himself not only to forget, but to conceal completely?
